Easily one of the most desirable neighbourhoods in all of Edmonton, Old Strathcona is a large area located just south of the North Saskatchewan River and downtown Edmonton. Geographically speaking, it runs between Whyte (82nd) Avenue and the central river valley from north to south and from the Mill Creek Ravine to 107 Street from east to west. While there are some great bargains to be found in older homes built pre-WWII era that are in need of some modernization, most of the properties in this area are quite expensive due to demand and other lifestyle factors. Its central location and proximity to Whyte Avenue, the University of Alberta, and plenty of green space make it the perfect place to call home for pretty much anyone.

The majority of properties in Old Strathcona were built between 1970-79 due to the increased demand for walk-up apartment style buildings for young professionals or students attending the University of Alberta. However, there are certainly a lot of much older buildings in the area as well, including some homes that are over 100+ years old. Of course, there has also been a lot of new developments in the area over the past few decades, especially along 99th street between the Old Timers Cabin and Whyte Avenue. From Bateman's IGA and Wild Earth Foods to the brand new "Bateman Lands" project, the influx of commercial projects in Strathcona provide residents with an ideal mix between classic style and modern convenience.

The rental market in this neighbourhood is also booming, as over 70% of all homes are rented. This factor has also contributed to the high property values compared to other communities located within the CIty of Edmonton. Premium condominiums are also a staple in Old Strathcona, as the south side of Saskatchewan Drive features many extremely desirable properties including Waters Edge, Lord Strathcona Manor, One River Park, Cranleigh Towers, and The Rembrandt - just to name a few.

For younger families, Old Strathcona has an impressive array of schooling options including King Edward Elementary, the Academy at King Edward, and Old Strathcona High School. The Strathcona Community League also features a fantastic outdoor skating rink and many opportunities for kids to participate in athletic teams/programs. There are also a ton of other recreational activities available including the Queen Elizabeth outdoor swimming pool, the Kinsmen Sports Centre, Strathcona Public Library, and the Old Strathcona Farmer’s Market which runs year-round on Saturdays from 8 AM - 3 PM.
